Comet Hyakutake 1996B2

This comet was the brightest comet seen in 20 years and was visible to the naked eye. This spectacular comet was photographed in this 8 minute exposure using the schmidt camera on March 21, 1996. I wrote a special computer program that was connected to the telescope to force the telescope to track on the comet's motion. This produced the trailed stars, but revealed more fine detail in the tail. Notice the waivy lines. To give you an idea of the size of this image, you can place 12 full moons side by side from top to bottom.
