North America Nebula

NA Neb

Copyright ©1996 by Paul Mortfield

This famous summer object in the constellation of Cygnus was photographed in 1996 using an 8 inch Epoch Schmidt Camera. This photograph culminated 5 years of evolution in my work with the schmidt camera. The Pelican nebula is on the right. However, none of these web images are as good as the original prints.

For the Astrophotographers:

A cropped blow up of the Pelican Neb region to show the resolution obtained with the schmidt at a megre 300mm fl. This is from the same scan as the entire image above. The scan is from an 8x10 print (not the neg), so any softness in the stars is due to my enlarging at that magnification. Print was scanned in at 300dpi. Original image was on 35mm hypered tech-pan, 60min exposure using a #92 wratten filter. Development was in HC-110 dilution-B. I wanted a softer print to get better latitude and some gray versus my previous super high contrast image. The print was made on some Oriental Seagull RC Grade 4 that I had stockpiled before they discontinued manufacturing.

  • Pelican Low-Res 67K reduced to 144dpi
  • Pelican HIGH-Res 347K at the scanned 300dpi
p.s. the images still look better in photoshop than at web resolutions.
